Bristol: A fascinating fusion of old and new

The wonderful UK West Country city of Bristol is one of those places where the very contemporary co-exists with the very old, making for a wonderful fusion of eras sure to entice any holidaymaker looking for a great getaway.

Travelling to Bristol

One of the main reasons behind Bristol’s long history is the city’s accessibility. You can travel here via train, sea, car and air. Anyone who is thinking of visiting the city can easily go online and learn more about flying from Bristol so that they can make their journey to and from the city with ease.

Banksy and Bristol

The city has blossomed in recent years to become a centre of multiculturalism, art, and culture and is renowned as a centre for enjoyment. Anyone who is keen on Street Art will love some of the walking tours around the city that point out the work of 21st century street artists to visitors. After all, Bristol was the home of the world renowned Banksy and the Bristol Museum and Art Gallery house some of his works.

Bristol seafaring past

Bristol’s Harbourside is the place to go if you want to step aboard a 19th century steam ship, the SS Great Britain, designed by Isambard Brunel. If you want to go even further back in nautical history then M Shed is where The Matthew is moored. This ship is a faithful reconstruction of the 1497 John Cabot boat that he used to reach Newfoundland. Nowadays you don’t have to want to go to Canada to board The Matthew; you can just take one of the boat’s regular trips to experience Bristol from the water.

Bristol’s surrounding area

If you want to explore the region around Bristol, then one of the most intriguing places to visit is Wookey Hole. These caves were the home of an infamous witch, and the area has been transformed into an activity venue for the whole family. Wookey Hole is about 45 minutes away from Bristol and close to the cathedral city of Wells. The Mendip hills, the Somerset Levels and the South Wales coast are all easily accessible from Bristol.

Entertainment in Bristol

Bristol has long had a justified reputation as a centre for the arts. The band Massive Attack comes from the city, as do legions of other bands, DJs and MCs. The city has a proud theatrical tradition; you could visit The Hippodrome or The Tobacco Factory Theatres for an evening of sophistication and enjoyment.
