Travelling around London

As the capital city of England, seat of the Government of the United Kingdom and major European financial hub, London is not only the most populous city in the UK but it is also the most visited.

For anyone travelling into London it can be a daunting experience. Whether you have just arrived at one of the airports and are travelling by train or if you are one of the many tradesmen and women driving in commercial vans, getting from A to B can be less than easy.

The M25

The motorway ring road around the outskirts of London is the orbital M25 and was originally designed so that unnecessary journeys through the city could be avoided by going around it. Today, the motorway almost represents the border of Greater London and once inside it you can think of yourself as being involved in part of the city's transport system.

Emissions Zone

The London Low Emission Zone (LEZ) is a traffic pollution charge scheme aimed at reducing the tailpipe emissions of diesel-powered commercial vehicles in London. The zone started operating in 2008 and is administered by the Transport for London executive agency within the Greater London Authority.

The zone operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and covers most of Greater London with deviations to allow diversionary routes so that non-compliant vehicles can avoid it.

Congestion charge

There is another area that drivers into London need to be aware of, and that is the one covering the Congestion Charge Zone (CCZ). In central London between 07:00 and 18:00 Monday to Friday there is a fee charged on most motor vehicles travelling within the zone.

The project has the twin aims of reducing congestion and raising investment funds for London's transport system.

Underground Network

The London tube system is one of the most established in the world and some parts are more than a century and a half old. The interconnecting network of lines stretch across most of north London from east to west, but south London remains poorly served by the system apart from a couple of lines such as the Northern and Victoria.

Although not the most modern of urban underground train networks, London's tube system carries more than 10 billion passengers a year – that’s as many as the entire UK National Rail network!
