Top events and attractions in London this summer

2012 is London’s year. Not that the British capital has ever really lurked in the shadows, but 2012 more than any other year in recent history is when London is very much in the spotlight.

Firstly we have all the spectacle and extravaganza of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. To celebrate this momentous occasion there are free concerts, art exhibitions, the biggest flotilla the Thames has seen in more than 300 years and the lighting of the National Beacon. Additionally, we get an extra Bank Holiday, which should bring a smile to even the most unpatriotic of faces. A four-day weekend filled with street parties, music and bright lights is surely something to celebrate. This extra day means London hotels have received a boost. Millennium Hotels has six London hotels all in close proximity to the Jubilee celebrations including the Millennium Hotel London Knightsbridge and the Millennium Hotel London Mayfair so you can enjoy a luxury break just a hop and skip from Buckingham Palace.

Of course we can’t forget the Olympics – the main reason why London has been thrust into the international spotlight this year. It may be costing a fortune, but it is sure to be worth it thanks to the sheer number of events taking place in honour of this prestigious event.

The London 2012 Festival will see more than 1,000 events take place from June to September in various locations throughout the capital. There will be art, music, dance and comedy from a plethora of famous faces as well as local communities.

The Festival of the World will take over London’s Southbank Centre all summer long with sport-inspired art, interactive exhibits and games predominantly aimed at children.

The Olympics itself will run from 27 July to 12 August followed by the Paralympics from 29 August until 9 September. Tickets may be hard to come by, but you can still catch all the action and enjoy the electrifying atmosphere by viewing the games on giant screens placed at strategic locations throughout the capital including Hyde Park, Trafalgar Square and Victoria Park. If you’ve been putting off a trip to the capital, summer 2012 is the time to get in gear and make the most of this global city.
