London is a crowded city, but its authorities have been working to improve transport conditions for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers, designing sophisticated proposals to reduce London’s streets congestions.

Those who come from other cities could reach London’s downtown by plane, train, bus, car or ferry connections. To move around London, sometimes a walk or a bicycle could be an effective alternative. However, London has a very comprehensive public transport system, where both buses and subways represent an easy way to move around the city.

Tube tips

London underground known as “The Tube” is the quickest way to move around the city. London tube stations are well-distributed around the six transport zones (1 central – 6 outer edge), and the different lines support good trains frequencies for both north-south and east-west directions. Download the London Underground MAP.

The tube is usually open from 5 a.m. until midnight, but this depends on the stations schedules, day of the week and lines frequencies. We recommend visiting the Transport for London website to check lines services updates, tickets and schedules.

Some tips for London Tube:

•    Try to get the Oyster Card, so you can beat the queues
•    Check the front of the train for the correct destination
•    Stand on the right when using the escalators
•    Check you map before you get downstairs
•    Avoid traveling at the in-out office hours
•    Mind the gap between the train and the platform

There are different facilities for disabled people at tube stations and trains. Even though lifts and escalators will made easier for disabled people, they must take care with the gap between the train and the platform when getting on-off the tube.

Buses tips

London buses keep a traditional English style that inspires admiration for every London traveler. The buses are a symbol of the city, and one of the most tourist and easiest way to move around. Download your London Buses Map.

There are more than 8000 low-floor buses, most of them with two floors that offer a great panoramic view. As low-floor vehicles, there are lowered to the street level when the buses stop and open the doors, extending a retractable ramp that enables all the people to get easily on-off the bus (specially disabled people).

At most of the bus stops there are electronic placards showing the time left for the next buses, indicating each bus number and destiny. Moreover, each bus stop has a map where you can check each bus route in order to define your way.

Although you can pay the ticket at the front door of the bus (with the driver), we strongly recommend purchasing an Oyster card, so you will save money, avoid queues and carrying lot of pennies.

Traveling by bus is a great option for tourists because they feel as experiencing a city tour. Buses lines offer fewer frequencies at night, so you must check the Transport for London website  to get the most updated information.

Oyster Card tips

The Oyster is a magnetic card used to pay at London’s public transport network. It is very simple to use, buy and recharge. This smartcard could be recharged at every pay point store, tube stations, London Travel Information Centers or online.

If you are planning a short-term visit to London, the Oyster will also be your best transport deal. When arriving to London, you can get a pre-pay Oyster, and charge the daily, weekly, or monthly pass for tube or bus. This fare will be cheaper than the daily, weekly or monthly transport Travelcard or Bus Pass.

Visit the Oyster Card website to get further information.

Discounts tips

There are several discounts for senior, students, disabled people and children. Visit the Oyster Card Website or the Transport for London website to get further information about.
